Penguin contribution by ame
Hotcakes!!! Just finished this >_< Really couldn’t think of any ideas, so this is just a random drawing somehow related!! ..If I were a penguin.. I would think:
” Why don’t we just be what we are and swim? “
But this would mean no breakthrough ba.. T_T Personally thought this quite corny haha hope you people like it too! (.>_<.)
Think Out! #001
Note that everything is tentative now and subject to changes in the future! Suggestions welcome for Topics, Rules, and even the name for this thing… Voice your opinions. =)
The Think Out! FAQ:
1) What’s this thingy?
- It’s kind of like an event here whereby everyone can joins in and draw together. More like a casual art battle, not a contest nor competition. It has neither judges nor winners. Think Out! is the suggested name by leeyeung and I think it’s kind of cool.
2) How does it work?
- Every 2 weeks (tentative) I will post a new topic. Everyone post a doodle or something to see what each of us can come out creatively. Then everyone can share, view and comment on others’ works. All forms of style accepted!
3) What can I get from doing this?
- Fun and pleasure. Comments and crits for your work (that is if you want). Getting your right brain to get some creative juice flowing. Or, simply something to get your ass off and draw!
4) Who’s participating?
- You. Yea YOU, the one reading this. No, there’s no one behind you, stop turning. XD
5) Who’s in charge here?
- Me of coz…T_T I’ll be posting the topics and other related stuffs here, as well as control flamers, etc etc. I will however be open to all form of suggestions, so you does have a say. This thing will never work out if not for the participation of everyone! It’s the people who makes the kingdom, not the king.
6) Rules and regulations?
- Every member of Arthletes can join. Each member can submit up to 2,874 submissions per topic (get my point?). Everyone can comment on others submission, unless the artist states otherwise. No flaming, any flamer will be dealt with forcing 18 lizards down his/her throat.
7) Is there a deadline?
- Yes, I’ll set the deadline 2 weeks after I announce the topic. Why is there a deadline? Becoz I know if there isn’t, you guys will spend forever doing it… and in the end not doing it altogether. However, you can still post after the deadline, but please try to meet it so it does not stack.
8) Etiquette?
- This is a fun event. Try to be nice and encouraging. =)
9) Anything to add?
- Start drawing!!! Go go go!!!!!!!!
Think Out! #001 topic will be… Penguin’s Solution to Flight! Freaking easy topic to start off with. Deadline is 7th July 08, before the 3 enlist into NS. Don’t wait til the last minute, can post anytime!
art battle thingy
I don’t really know what to call it. It’s neither a contest nor competiton. I does not have judges nor winners nor prizes.
Anyway me and lee yeung was thinking something like ‘we post a topic and everyone joins in and draw and have fun’, or called WPATAEJIADAHF for short….. Ok nvm that.
In whichever way it’s to encourage constant artistic interaction on this website and keeps individuals creative juice flowing. The purpose is just to have fun, seriously. No excuses like “too troublesome to post” or “I have no time for things liddat”or “mine probably suck anyway” etc.
How things go is that we’ll come up with a topic and everyone post a doodle or something to see what each of us can come out creatively. =D
Did I say doodle? Yes! To make sure that this art thingy is about CONCEPT rather than execution, we’re to only post something that can be done in under a day! It’s also to be fair for those who claims his/her drawing sucks, like myself. But of coz, sloppiness can be avoided wherever possible. I mean, at least put some sincerity into it. =)
What’s the ’topic’ then? Lee yeung came out with ‘Waiting’…. which totally fails. lol. I’m going for something that can be visualized… an IMAGERY. Example, ’snowboarding gorilla throwing bananas’, ‘wild boar gone berserk’, ‘trees that grows poisonous fruit’, ‘mecha kangaroo with guns’, ’steampunk robot eating rabbits’… you get my point.
Best still, becoz I’m going for concept, I can make a topic that YOU are the one telling me the answer. Example is “the pirate’s nightmare”. Which sea creature do you think the seamen fear most? Or… “rabbits’ last defense against the wolves”? Or… “penguin’s solution to flight”? ^_^
So at the end of the day it’s not about who can draw better, but who has a better idea. Think we can have fun exploring these stuffs. I mean we need both technical and idea-generating trainings mah.
Suggestions welcome! =D

new drawing method
After lee yeung viewed my sketchbook, he told me that I should stop using a millions lines to draw, but train to get it right using the first try. So I abandoned my old construction method and went ahead, the result is suprising…

This piece is more of a drawing practice and a study, I have references for them. Image is shown big to show line quality. And I purposely leave the sketchbk binding there to show some RAW powah~. XD
I found that this is actually quite close to the method Daryl has been using. I never thought I could do it, that is, until I tried. =)
This method DOES works much faster, and also looks cleaner with more ’seh’. I particularly like the one on lower left, showing some swiftness and accuracy. Can put down on paper what I can think of quickly. Thank you, lee yeung!! And daryl, I kind of understand how you draw le. =D
However, I would still encourage ppl to use constructions as to better sense of form. Then later can jumpboat to this method.
Now upon discovering this I suddenly got more mood to draw. It’s like one day you discover that holding alt is color pick in PS, makes you wants to paint more. Hahahaha… KK you dogs post something as well.
cheers

testing
Still confused about everything so i shall test a post! If you can read this then it must be successful! =D
ahhh….the 3hr sculpt that’s late for submission lol
oh well hi all, i decided to do a sculpt challenge but realize i haven been practising much digital sculpts and hence the lack of speed lol and the sculpt challenge was a speed sculpt 1, so i took a try, failed to hit 3 hr on first try and decided to do a less difficulty sculpt on 2nd try but i din know i’ve missed the deadline time cos its some lame GMT +00 time so i thought its supposed to end at 6pm but well it ended at 5pm lol so hence im late and cant submit…lol alright too much ranting, heres the 2 sculpt, first 1’s 3hr+ and the teeth is well..im inexperienced sculpting it from a rectanglish box,
and 2nd one i decided to hide the teeth hhaha its about 2hr+, almost 3hr i believe,
here goes.

oh btw the topic is orc and i dun really think i hit it right on lol,
well perhaps thats what happens when time is on my ass lol
or mayb lack of research or just plain laziness, well might be doing some anatomy studies indept in 3d soon,
oh btw, if lixiong u’re reading, the clay tubes in zbrush is pretty….amazing lol form comes naturally with that tool lol.
Edit: time limit for the competition is also 3hr lol
ahh..
ahh lol er i figured i’ll just post a quick post to avoid troublesome clicking,
sg, er this theme dun have the artist tabs by the side?
as for lx,
lots of stuffs! lol but er would appreciate if u could….rotate it into correct direction the next time u post? lol
i was looking thru all of them and i had to left turn, right turn, left turn, right turn, lol
i would say a same thing i told sg ba, do it by layering shading, instead of shading whenever happy lol,
go by like first erm base tone, then follow by core or cast shadow, that sort of thing yea, then u will feel less frustrated when trying to get detailed shading ba, the layers sorta unify them all, like the top most layer the basic form is down then as u proceed into cast shadow then u pull back, they still look gd cos the top layer is there, where as if u cast shadow first, then later u like cannot maintain tone then will end up like weird looking tone ba, anyway take it slowly yea, words of vilppu, drawing is actually very slow, there are thoughts to be made as u proceed, try to cross conture on more logical place lol like cross contour at the elbow and do alittle shading rather than ur occasional cross contour to like emphasis the form.
